In the heart of Saskatoon, researchers at the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization (VIDO) are waging a battle against drug-resistant tuberculosis. Their mission? To shorten the arduous six-month treatment plan, which often leads to non-compliance and the development of drug-resistant strains.
Dr. Neeraj Dhar, a leading researcher in this field, highlights the challenges patients face with the current treatment regimen. The lengthy duration, coupled with costly antibiotics and side effects, discourages many from completing the full course. This, in turn, fuels the emergence of drug-resistant TB.
"The bacteria comes back stronger, and often resistant to the treatment antibiotics," Dr. Dhar explains. His team's approach involves studying the body's pathways essential for bacterial survival, with the aim of identifying optimal targets for drugs. The ultimate goal? To reduce the treatment duration from six months to just one.
This ambitious goal is not without its challenges. As Dr. Dhar notes, "In the field, in the research community, we like to challenge ourselves, and this has been a dream if we can get it down to one month." It's a testament to the dedication and innovation of these researchers that they continue to pursue such ambitious goals.
Saskatchewan, unfortunately, has a higher-than-average TB rate, nearly double the national average. Dr. Dhar attributes this to localized issues such as overcrowded housing, limited access to healthcare, and food insecurity. The Inuit communities, in particular, bear the brunt of this disease, with TB rates almost ten times the national average.
"Historically, there have been specific communities (with TB), and that's where the disease continues to areas in certain sporadic outbreaks that keep happening," he explains. This highlights the importance of addressing social and economic factors in the fight against tuberculosis.
The symptoms of TB, including a persistent cough lasting over a month, weight loss, insomnia, and night sweats, should not be ignored. Early detection and treatment are crucial to preventing the spread of the disease and the development of drug-resistant strains.
